Save me, but from who?

I caught an interview the other day with Elian Gonzalez. He was the six year old Cuban that survived the boat capsizing while his mom was smuggling him away from his non-abusive father to family in Miami he had never met. He was the lone survivor. Anyways, 5 years later, now back in Cuba, I was braceing myself to see how badly the "Axis of Evil" Cubans have brain washed the kid. Here's my point, the most disturbing part of the interview, had nothing to do with the Cubans, but rather the US Americans.

Apparently the American relatives that were housing Elian have converted the house into a museum, complete with large crosses everywhere, including the front lawn, and the infamous closet. Along with the crosses, you also have pictures of both Elian and Jesus Christ side-by-side everywhere! Apparently they believe Elian Gonzalez is the second coming, a saint. Anything for a buck, I guess.

And to think the Cubans only treat him as a national hero. You decide which living situation would have been better. National Hero or Son of God.

OOOOoooh!!!! SOOOoooo CLOSE!!! Ya didn’t blow it, but… well… Reading this entry was like having a great meal at a great restaurant with great service, but the coffee (or espresso, cappuccino, mocha, etc.) at the end of the event was TERRIBLE. Instead of “…national hero or son of god”, I’d recommend saying “…national hero or son of a SANCTIMONIOUS mother.

To support my point, see your favorite dictionary or the free on-line encyclopedia www.wikipedia.org
According to them, Sanctimony is defined as “…a hypocritical form of excessive piety, considered to be an affection merely for public show. Similar terms are self-righteous, phony, and holier-than-thou. (Don’t many Christian faiths/denominations consider us as children of God?)

Its not a question of calling Elian the second coming of jesus or the son of God or whatever. There are religious mores in the Cuban culture that any uneducated and illinformed person may take as some kind of ritualistic BS.

Actually, the whole "we're all sons of god thing" did pop in my head while I was writting this entry. But doesn't that raise the question, that if we are to have a "second coming" its already happend, considering there's 6,471,000,000+ "children of god" running around right now? And who's to judge that one is more saintlier than another. Certainly, Elian story can be a miracle (surviving the Ocean is no small task), but is it a miracle that no one was hurt during his seizure, or just damn good training by the forces that went in.

Regardless, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for this kid. I just hope he can have a say in it.
