Nurses Strike pt 3

Scenario:

I'm a trucker and drive 12 hours a day, so what's the big deal?

Here's the thing, imagine driving 5 trucks at the same time 12 hours a day. There is another issue at hand. When a mistake is made (research will easily tell you that fatigue causes errors), then the nurse will likely loose their license, while the hospital sweeps the incedent under the rug. So basically 3-5 years of education go down the tubes because your employer had you working an unrealistic ratio for long hours. A ratio that doesn't exist at other McLeran sites.

Nurse shortages aren't due to a shortage of education or low wages. Even a little city like Lansing has two schools that produce tons of RN and LPNs each year. The shortage is due to these crazy ratios and hospitals that have poor experience balancing the books.

Wrong. I’m confident that Mclaren does have a great deal of experience 'balancing their books' and can do so quit well. However, you HAVE correctly hit-on the underlying problem (all be it, backwards). Though I’m unfamiliar with all the facts surrounding the problem there in Lansing, it seems to be the same problem being dealt with all across this country. Even here in CT!!! What am I referring too? MONEY/Profit!! Or should I say corporate GREED?!??! Fact: Labor is THE biggest cost associated with running a business. If a business can get the job done with less people (I’m not talking about getting it done well, efficiently, correctly, safely, ethically or even legally), big corporations will cut staff – especially if it’s a healthcare company. Thanks to the Republicans, this country’s healthcare system has gotten worse, as the healthcare “provider’s” profits have gotten outrageously better. For them, it doesn’t matter who they hurt (pun intended). Whether it’s the patients or their employees/nurses, the bottom line is making a BIG profit and having lots of power. Case in point: Ever heard of U.S. Senator Bill Frist, MD and the things he's done? ~CT/NY
